Coop basics: space, roosts, and nest boxes
A good coop keeps hens safe, dry, and comfortable, and keeps neighbors happy.
Space
Many NH town rules set minimums. For example, Nashua and Laconia require at least 3 sq ft of coop floor per bird when there's a run, and 10 sq ft of total space per bird. Give more if you can.
Roosts and nests
Hens sleep on roosts, so plan about a foot of roost bar per bird (Nashua's ordinance requires exactly that). One nest box for every few hens is plenty.
Ventilation, not drafts
Vents up high let moisture escape, which matters in New England winters. Keep drafts off roosting birds.
Keep it tidy
Several towns limit stored manure (often to 3 cubic feet, covered). Compost it or haul it away.
